For information you can find all my tips for visiting Melbourne by visiting my latest article. Melbourne is a city that I highly recommend to you, I particularly appreciated it even if, during my visit, the good weather was not there. In this article I give you all my advice on where to stay during your stay in Melbourne. Description of the different districts of the city but also the best addresses to stay in Melbourne.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN AREAS TO SLEEP IN MELBOURNE?
Melbourne is a relatively large city that extends over several tens of kilometres. Many districts are present in the city with, all of them, a particularity of their own. Let’s review the main sleeping areas in Melbourne.
> THE CENTRE OF MELBOURNE: CBD
Let’s start with Melbourne’s most central district, the CBD or Central Business District. The business district is also the central district of the city, it is located north of the Yarra River which separates the city in two. It is here that a large part of Melbourne’s activities are concentrated, as shown by Federation Square, the city’s most lively place. Every day, new things happen in Federation Square. It is also in this area that you will find many historical monuments such as the incredible library: State Library of Victoria or Melbourne City Hall. You can walk along these main avenues such as Bourke Street or Collins Street. Don’t forget to visit Victoria Street to discover the Queen Victoria Market, a place not to be missed under any circumstances.
The CBD will be a first choice place to sleep in Melbourne. The district has many hotels of all kinds.
Note that in a large part of this district tramway travel will be free. This one goes around, approximately, the central district.
> FITZROY AND CARLTON
Fitzroy and Carlton are two neighbourhoods located north of the CBD and will also make excellent neighbourhoods to stay in Melbourne. These neighbourhoods are constantly active. Fitzroy is Melbourne’s trendy bohemian neighborhood. You will find many restaurants, trendy and original bars or trendy cafés. It is in this district that the must-see Melbourne Museum retraces the country’s history, addressing the themes of local culture, fauna and flora.
In these areas you will find a little less hotels but inns or apartments for rent.
> DOCKLANDS DISTRICT
The Docklands district is none other than the former Melbourne dock district. It is located in the southeast of the CBD, north of the Yarra River. This district was completely renovated several years ago to move from an abandoned district to a completely new, modern district with buildings housing many hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés. It is served by the circle tram, Melbourne’s free tramway. At the entrance, you will find the new Etihad Stadium, a little further on there is a shopping centre with many restaurants and shops and finally one of Melbourne’s main attractions, the Melbourne Star, Melbourne’s Ferris wheel. It is in this part of Melbourne that I stayed during my trip to the city.
SOUTHBANK > SOUTHBANK
Southbank is another neighborhood of the CBD, located to the south of the CBD, just below the Yarra river. This district includes many places of interest such as the Melbourne Art Center, the Melbourne Art Gallery, the Contemporary Art Center and the Melbourne Casino. To the east of this district is a huge sports complex with Melbourne’s legendary cricket stadium, the MCG, Melbourne Cricket Ground but also the tennis facilities with the Rod Laver Arena which hosts the famous Australian Open every year and a large park. This district has a little less place to sleep but nevertheless offers very good quality accommodation.
> ST KILDA
Let’s now move on to the last quarter to sleep in Melbourne. We will not mention the districts of Richmond, located east of the CBD, or South Melbourne, south of Southbank, which are, for me, a little less suitable for housing in Melbourne. With few points of interest, a little outlying, these districts are not ideal for staying in Melbourne.
The last quarter will therefore be Saint Kilda. This district is also a little out of the centre since it is located to the south of the South Melbourne district. Why stay in the St Kilda district of Melbourne? Quite simply because this district is none other than Melbourne’s “beach”. A long beach lined with restaurants, bars and cafés. You will also find Melbourne’s famous Luna Park. An ideal place to stay in Melbourne, especially in summer (the area is a bit deserted in winter). You can enjoy the beautiful beach of Melbourne not far from your accommodation.
